KEY CHARACTERS

CAIN SAINT JOHN

At 24, Cain walks with an air of confidence and cool detachment, his style reminiscent of timeless charm. This veil of aesthetic nonchalance masks a life anchored in responsibility. Drummer and backbone of a band fronted by his PTSD-afflicted sister, Abel, they share a sparse Venice Beach flat. In this realm of scarcity, he's the steadying force—not just for Abel, but also for his devoted stripper girlfriend, Kaitlyn.

ABELIA (ABEL) SAINT JOHN

In the labyrinth of her psyche, Abel is a wounded songbird with a sky's worth of talent. Haunted by a school shooting and the phantoms of PTSD, she's a study in contrasts: brilliance and instability, protected by Cain, her sentinel brother. Reared in faith but riddled with "survivor's and God's guilt," she seeks redemption through rock 'n roll. Opening for 'Los Angels' at the Roxy offers her a taste of validation, but the shadows of self-doubt and past trauma persist. Can she unshackle herself and, in doing so, liberate the band that leans so heavily upon her?

JANELLE ESTRADA

Janelle's early dream to be a singer was tarnished by one regrettable career move gone severely wrong costing her, her own voice. Innocence lost, Janelle finds purpose in protecting Abel from the same fate. Resolute to remove an abusive mentor, she plots to take over Zenith Records and oust the tyrant. Long ago, her one-night stand with Trent, the Lost Angels lead singer, led to a child which she kept secret until her son’s life depends on a liver transplant. Janelle embodies resilience and determination, which she relays in her pitch to the band offering them more than material wealth, which resonates with them.

TRENT

In the spotlight’s glare, Trent, the quintessential rock star, embarks on a labyrinthine odyssey of self-reclamation. Wrestling with the ghosts of substance abuse and unresolved demons, he’s adrift. Trent evolves from a hedonistic anti-hero to a more compassionate soul, embracing sobriety and purpose. His voyage into redemption unveils the dance of self-acceptance and amends-making, amplifying the narrative’s depth and showcasing the enigmatic nature of personal growth. His transformation allows for meaningful relationships with his son and Janelle.

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

JEREMIAH (MIAH)

Jeremiah (Miah), a vibrant and youthful soul, has long been a comforting presence as a barista at the local coffee shop, his sanctuary amidst life's chaos. His charming, adorkable charisma conceals inner battles with profound insecurities. Amber, his toxic love, feeds these insecurities but the band sparks an awakening, paving the way for his transformative journey. His character arc mirrors the universal quest for self-discovery and acceptance of our inherent uniqueness while navigating the path to adulthood.

JESSE

Jesse's journey from Berkeley graduate to a street-savvy hustler in Venice Beach exemplifies life’s unpredictable twists. With an impressive music business degree, she defies convention by selling shrooms and peddling music. A true chameleon, Jesse navigates diverse situations with ease, connecting deeply with people. Her unshakable bond with Cain and Abel, forged in school, reflects her determination to break into the music industry. Gifted at guitar and reading people and situations, Jesse thrives in the complex music landscape.

LUCAS

Lucas is a musical Midas with a decade-long legacy under Zenith. A witty rapport with Janelle lightens his darker humor. Now in his 40s, Lucas grapples with burnout and dreams of llama sanctuaries. A prima donna in his own soundproof realm, he's at a crossroads, facing a choice between surrendering to ennui or rediscovering his lost 'why.' Like the Japanese art of Kintsugi, Lucas's struggle could be the golden seam that makes his next chapter even more brilliant than before.

AUSTIN

Austin is something of an enigma. We actually think it’s the Texan city to which the band is referring until we realize he’s an actual person. It gets even more complicated when we discover Austin is Abel’s first (and arguably only) true love, slain in the high school shooting from which she suffers PTSD. We learn not only did he throw his body over hers to protect her - but it’s his blood she had to cover herself in to “play dead” as the shooters swept through the school a second time.
